Video Saturday – #Writers on Writing: Amis, Didion, Gladwell, Smith, Franzen, and Lebowitz via Charlie Rose

My favorite video in a long time.  There is a lot of good advice and ideas.  I already know I’m going to post a few of the quotes around my office!

LITERATURE IS A WAR AGAINST CLICHES – Martin Amis

It is about writers looking for a voice, a freshness, and making things your own.  I know I’ve been guilty of phrases like:

“…rummaging around in her handbag…”

“…the heat was stifling…”

“…seen it, done it, got the t-shirt…”

“I don’t think so…”

It is HEARD writing, HEARD feeling, and HEARD responses…What you’re trying to do is be faithful to your perceptions and transmit them as faithfully as you can.  Sometimes it is euphony and sometimes it is harshness.

FICTION IS A GREAT GOOD IN THE WORLD – Zadie Smith

When you write you’re being more humane.  Less selfishness and your own sense of self because you’re capturing others.  🙂  When it is going well, it can be quite joyful.

TEACHING YOURSELF THAT EVERYTHING IS INTERESTING – Malcolm Gladwell

IT DOESN”T GO WELL AT FIRST.  YOU’RE ALMOST FINISHED BEFORE IT STARTS TO BE A GOOD TIME – Joan Didion

PEOPLE ARE LONELY.  NOVELS ARE ABOUT CONNECTING. – Jonathan Franzen

It isn’t about a message but rendering my experience of the world and share that with someone.  Have the reader be carried along, and have you think about things because sometimes it is FUN to think.

[WRITING] IS YOUR RELIGIONG AND YOU ARE REVERENT ABOUT THE BOOK – Fran Lebowitz

I am afraid of writing because I’ve taken all human fear and put it on this one thing [writing].   Nothing lives up to books.

Video Saturday – #Diversity in #Writing and the Fear of Doing it Wrong, courtesy of the @YARebels

And the latest Video Saturday is something near and dear to my heart – Diversity. One of the biggest reasons authors say they don’t include diverse characters in so far as race, ethnicity, disability, lgbt status etc. is because they are afraid of getting it wrong. Although not perfect, this week’s video is a quick little pep talk urging folks to step up and go ahead and embrace diversity. It isn’t hard, and as people to whom creativity is the bread and butter of our work, this should be an integral part of our writing. After all, it is an integral part of the world, isn’t it?

Character Insight – Fear

Darth VaderToday’s episode comes from Jane Espenson, who is currently under a development deal with NBC/Universal television while working as Co-Executive Producer on Battlestar Galactica. She says, “During the Super-Tuesday coverage, I heard a pundit ask another pundit to stop talking about the greatest wishes of each campaign and instead give us a little insight into their greatest fears.” What a great idea! It is usually obvious in a script what a character wants, but one way to potentially add depth and offer a more intimate perspective is to show us what a character DOESN’T want. As the villains in far too many films have said, “Fear is a powerful motivator.”
