Emotional vs. Intellectual Words (Is there such a thing?) #writing

What do you think? Are there words that are more “intellectual” versus “emotional?” How do we determine which is which? Is it just which is used more often or has become part of the vernacular?

#Writing Memes and Interesting Things: What about the word ‘very?’

quote-never-use-the-word-very-it-is-the-weakest-word-in-the-english-language-doesn-t-mean-anything-william-allen-white-302455

Never use the word, ‘very.’ It is the weakest word in the English language; doesn’t mean anything. If you feel the urge of ‘very’ coming on, just write the word, ‘damn,’ in the place of ‘very.’ The editor will strike out the word, ‘damn,’ and you will have a good sentence. – William Allen White

Video Saturday (Not quite): #Writing Advice – Other Ways to Say it

Okay, this Saturday, I once again found something I liked a little better than video.  Below are a couple of great infographics from “We Are Teacher’s” Pinterest Writing Workshop Board. As writers, I have no doubt that we all have pretty decent vocabularies, but like anyone else, we can and do fall into traps of using our much fewer preferred words.  This is a nice reminder that there is a whole world of words out there to choose from.  As Mark Twain said, “The difference between finding a word and finding the right word, is the difference between lightning, and a lightning bug.”

Geographic Descriptors for #Writers from Octoswan

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I do enjoy Tumblr.  It is fun, easy, and a very different sort of sharing community.  Today’s post isn’t really a video but it was too too cool NOT to include.

A series of graphics that show a variety of descriptors for different kinds land, sea, and sky put together by Carolyn/Octoswan.  Just some reminders to take us away from the hackneyed words we use far too often. I thought I’d post the first this week and slowly eke them out over time.  If you’re impatient, you can also check them out at her website here.  Wicked cool.  Thanks Carolyn!
